Product Resources manufactures a high-precision navigation device for a robotic surgical system

Background

Orthopedic robotic surgery is transforming the medical field by enabling procedures with unprecedented precision. Leading medical device companies are developing advanced robotic systems to assist with hip, knee, and other orthopedic surgeries—offering significant benefits such as reduced invasiveness, improved outcomes, and faster recovery times.

These robotic systems are highly complex and often involve collaboration among multiple contract manufacturers with specialized capabilities.

The Product

Product Resources was selected to advise, source, and manufacture a critical component of a next-generation robotic surgical system: the Surgical Robot Navigation & Tool Holder.

This device acts as a high-precision tool holder positioned between the robotic arm and the surgical instrument (such as a drill or saw). It integrates with navigational beacons and 3D cameras to help guide the robot’s software, enabling precise tool placement during surgery—even compensating for subtle patient movement due to breathing.

This level of precision allows surgeons to perform procedures that may have been considered too risky in the past.

The Challenges

The project came with extremely high performance expectations, demanding tight control over both the manufacturing process and the supply chain. This included coordination with both our own suppliers and those of the client.

Each component had to meet very tight tolerances and undergo rigorous validation to ensure compliance with performance and quality standards.

Our Process

The engagement began with an alpha prototype developed by the client’s internal design team. From there, the client’s engineering team conducted a series of engineering builds and pilot runs to refine the design for manufacturability and validate a repeatable, high-precision production process.

The Outcome

The product is now in active production with weekly shipments scheduled over an 8–12 month forecast. As software updates continue to expand the robot’s capabilities, this hardware platform is well-positioned to support additional surgical procedures in the future.
