Product Resources develops advanced dental hygiene device using infrared technology

Background

Dental hygiene technology is rapidly evolving, with new tools emerging to improve both patient outcomes and practitioner efficiency. Infrared-based devices represent a major innovation in oral care, offering the ability to remove plaque more effectively and with less discomfort than traditional methods.

For dental practices and hygienists, these devices promise cleaner results, shorter chair times and a better overall experience for patients. But to deliver consistent performance, the product must be engineered and manufactured with precision and repeatability.

The Product

Product Resources was selected to support the development of a next-generation dental hygiene device designed for professional use by dental hygienists.

The device uses advanced infrared beams to quickly and completely remove plaque from teeth. Unlike traditional scaling tools, it works without mechanical scraping, offering a cleaner and less invasive process for both patients and practitioners.

This new technology has the potential to transform preventive dental care by delivering faster treatments, improved patient comfort and superior plaque removal.

The Challenges

The client came to Product Resources with a fully functional beta prototype in hand. While the concept and initial design were proven, the product needed:

  • A manufacturing design process to transition from prototype to production.
  • Design for Manufacturability (DFM) to streamline assembly and ensure repeatable quality.
  • Pilot production runs to validate performance and prepare for scaled manufacturing.

The infrared system’s complexity meant tight control over tolerances, safety standards and component sourcing. Regulatory compliance and long-term reliability also had to be built into the design from the start.

Our Process

Working closely with the client’s development team, Product Resources guided the product through a structured manufacturing readiness process:

  • Design for Manufacturability review to refine the prototype for efficient, cost-effective production.
  • Engineering builds and pilot runs to validate precision performance and ensure safety compliance.
  • Supply chain coordination to source critical components and prepare for consistent production volumes.

Each step was documented and validated to meet the demanding standards required for professional medical and dental devices.

The Outcome

The device is now positioned for full-scale production, with pilot runs successfully demonstrating both performance and manufacturability. Dental hygienists can soon access a breakthrough technology that improves efficiency while enhancing the patient experience.

With this foundation in place, the client is poised to launch a product that could redefine preventive dental care, while Product Resources continues to provide the design and manufacturing expertise to support scaling and future product extensions.
